I am a project engineer for
Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway-the nations second
largest freight railroad with 45K employees, and 33K miles of
track. Big slow moving corporate machine. I develop and manage
projects on the engineering side relative to new industries
receiving rail service, passenger rail stations, public projects
etc. I wear many hats and am the sole field/project engineer in
Southern Ca. I am the one left holding the large workload after
all the corporate downsizing. It is overwhelming most of the time
and makes me crazy. My formal education is in surveying and
mapping which I finished at the age of 37. I schooled for a year
at the Denver Institute of Technology where I received an
Associate of Applied Science degree. Before that I was Bell
Captain at La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad. You may have heard
of it. Used to hold the Tournament of Champions golf tournament
there, from its inception until just a few years ago. Now that was
a fun job for a long time, living the easy life in the 80's
surfing , skiing, Baja, and doing a fair amount of partying (glad
those days are over), but something I did not want to do beyond my
thirties. Two great kids, my son Griffin is 10 and my daughter
Quinn is 7.
It is fun thinking back to
our childhood. What a different era. You know, it seems like I
spent about half of my young life in that park, even through high
school I went there almost every night to play basketball under
the lights. I still keep in contact with some of the guys from the
old neighborhood. I talk to Jim Lee (Huntington Beach)
occasionally. Jay Forbes is in Temecula, but I have not seen him
in 20 years. I was always, and am still to this day, very close
friends with Carl West. He and I spent 5 months in Europe in
1972-73. He lives in Atlanta and teaches high school Geography and
Political Science.
